Most Denver-metro houses need a mix, not a single answer. The condition of the existing frame and the flashing history behind it decide which approach is honest for each opening:

• —Insert (pocket) replacement. The existing frame stays and a new unit is set into it. Appropriate when the frame is square, dry and was flashed correctly to begin with. Less disruption to interior and exterior finishes, but it inherits whatever is behind the trim.
• —Full-frame replacement. Frame, trim and interior returns come out so the rough opening, sill pan and water-resistive barrier can be corrected and re-integrated. The right call on rotted or out-of-square openings, and on houses where past leaks show up as stained sills or soft headers.

Where framing damage is found once the opening is exposed, header and rough-opening repair is handled as part of the same scope rather than deferred — that work overlaps with framing and structural work when the damage runs beyond the opening itself.

Replacing openings at the same time as siding, trim or an outdoor structure is usually cheaper and always better detailed, because the water-resistive barrier can be lapped correctly instead of cut into after the fact. Front Range conditions are hard on openings in three separate ways, and each one changes a specification rather than a preference. Hail along the I-25 corridor argues for impact-resistant glazing and durable exterior cladding on the unit. Unfiltered high-altitude UV degrades cheap sealant, glazing gaskets and vinyl faster than the same products fail at sea level. And a 40-degree swing between afternoon and dawn moves every joint in the assembly, which is why sill pans and a properly lapped water-resistive barrier matter more here than the brochure U-factor.

• —South and west elevations — lower SHGC to control summer gain; these are also the elevations that weather first.
• —East elevations — a higher SHGC is usually welcome for winter morning sun.
• —Foothills-adjacent lots in Lakewood and west Arvada see stronger wind-driven rain, so flashing detail carries more of the load than glass specification.
