A-Frame Homes & Mountain Cabins

A-frame homes and mountain cabins are excellent structures for Colorado's high-country lots, but they demand deliberate framing, roofing and envelope detailing — and a build plan that respects how hard the site itself can be to work on. Abricos LLC builds these structures on site, stick by stick, with the schedule organized around access, weather windows, snow, wind exposure and whatever utilities the parcel does or does not already have. We completed a ground-up [A-frame cabin in Leadville](/projects/leadville-aframe-cabin-2026) from foundation through interior finishes, and that project is the clearest picture of how this work actually runs.

Mountain sites can see extreme snow load, temperature swings above 60°F in a single day, and high UV. Roof pitch, insulation strategy, and fenestration are chosen for the specific elevation and exposure.

Mountain counties often have overlays for wildfire, wildlife, or steep slope in addition to standard building permits. Requirements are confirmed with the specific jurisdiction before scope is finalized.

— Scope

Site-built cabin versus a kit or prefab package

Two very different products get called the same thing. A kit or prefab package is a manufactured set of components — often a shell, sometimes a panelized or modular structure — bought from a supplier and then erected and finished on your lot. A site-built cabin is framed in place from lumber and engineered members, which is what we do.

Abricos LLC does not sell, manufacture or distribute A-frame kits, prefab shells or framing packages, and we are not an owner-builder framing supplier. If a kit is the right answer for your budget, the supplier relationship is yours and the shell arrives on a schedule they control.

The practical difference shows up in the parts of the job nobody photographs: foundation, site work, utilities, envelope detailing, inspections and finishes. Those exist either way. A kit removes some framing labor; it does not remove the site.

Site-built usually makes more sense when the lot is irregular, when access limits what can be delivered in one piece, when the interior layout is specific to the household, or when the structure has to be adapted after excavation reveals what is actually underground.

— Logistics

Access, delivery and the mountain build calendar

On a high-country parcel, logistics are part of the structural plan. Before scope is fixed we want to know how a loaded delivery truck reaches the site, whether a concrete truck can turn around, where lumber can be stacked and covered, whether the access road is maintained in winter, and what the road looks like during spring mud.

  • Access road grade and width — determines the size of the equipment and delivery vehicles that can reach the lot.
  • Turnaround and staging area — concrete, crane and lumber deliveries all need somewhere to work.
  • Seasonal window — elevation shortens the reliable construction season, which shapes the order of operations more than it shapes the total scope.
  • Temporary power and water — a parcel without service needs a plan for both before framing starts.

Our Leadville cabin is a real example of that sequencing: the frame went up, the roof and windows closed the building in, and siding, deck and interior finishing continued from a weather-protected shell rather than an open structure.

— Structure

Foundation, slope and structural engineering

The A-frame's charm is also its structural demand: a steep roof that is simultaneously the wall, carrying snow load down to a narrow footprint. Rafter sizing, connections, ridge and collar detailing and the load path into the foundation are engineered for the specific site — they are not carried over from a plan drawn for another elevation.

Structural engineering and architectural design are performed by appropriately licensed professionals, not in-house. We coordinate with the design team, build to the stamped drawings, and raise constructability issues while they are still cheap to solve on paper.

Snow load, wind exposure category, seismic and frost depth requirements differ by jurisdiction and by elevation, and we do not publish a single number that supposedly applies statewide. The governing figures for your parcel come from the local building department and the project engineer.

Foundation type follows the soils report and the slope. A steeply sloped lot, shallow bedrock, or expansive soil each push the design in a different direction, which is why that information is gathered before a budget hardens.

— Envelope and systems

Moisture, insulation and utility coordination

In a steep-roof structure the roof assembly is most of the envelope, so insulation strategy, air sealing and moisture control have to be decided as one assembly rather than trade by trade. Ventilated and unvented roof approaches both exist; which is appropriate depends on the assembly, the insulation type and the design team's direction.

Detailing to plan early: valleys and dormers if the design has them, snow shed away from doors and walkways, ice-and-water protection at eaves, penetrations for flues and vents, and where meltwater lands once it leaves that roof.

Where a parcel has no service, well drilling, septic design and propane are handled by the appropriately licensed specialists. We coordinate their scheduling with the construction sequence — those systems drive site disturbance and inspection timing, so their feasibility is confirmed during the site-visit phase rather than assumed.

A realistic preconstruction checklist

  • Parcel and zoning basics — confirm the reviewing jurisdiction, setbacks, height limits and any wildfire, wildlife or steep-slope overlay that applies to the address.
  • Access — drive it in the season you plan to build, not only in summer.
  • Soils and survey — the geotechnical report and a current survey precede foundation design.
  • Utilities — verify service availability, or budget the time and cost of well, septic and propane.
  • Design team — architect or designer plus a structural engineer, selected and contracted by the homeowner.
  • Budget bands before design detail — so the drawings are aimed at a number the project can actually carry.
  • Schedule reality — permit review plus the elevation's construction season, not a generic 12-month template.

No. Abricos LLC is a site-built general contractor. We do not manufacture, sell or distribute A-frame kits, prefab shells or owner-builder framing packages. If you have already purchased a kit, whether we can take on its erection and finishing is a project-specific conversation that depends on the package, the site and the supplier's documentation.
